Her Story
My name is Alexandria Davis. I am an interdisciplinary artist and dance educator working at the intersection of postmodern dance, dance for health, Dunham Technique, and Afrofuturism. I refer to my practices as whimsically cathartic amalgamations of community-engaged research that focus on artistic questioning and unlearning. I advocate for 'joyful tantrums, spontaneous performances in which uncertainty is celebrated through expressive movement and speech, culminating in what I call a Moving Monologue. These abstract works draw on history and myth for inspiration, becoming site-specific productions and screendances that archive interpersonal insights, reflections, and moments of spiritual discovery. My creative process, called Dancing Back to Self, invites collaborators to engage with open-ended questions like, “If I plant you, what will you grow?” or “If your body were a flower, how would it root and rise?” By reflecting on these prompts, participants create together and develop new narratives that engage with the roles of the creator, artist, and the audience, as well as the taboo of witnessing and being seen unapologetically authentic.
